A wedding and family photographer based in Victoria, BC, Marlboro Wang has established a reputation for his grandiose, cinematic approach to capturing couples. You'll notice it in his wedding and engagement photos: breathtaking; each one carefully-staged, not a hair out of place. His photoshoots look more like movie sets; Wang always travels with softboxes—anything to ensure the lighting is just right. He captures it all: gown flowing, sun glowing, bridal veil floating like a sail in the wind.
In his seventh year as a professional photographer, Wang first grew to love the medium due to his father.
"As a child, I always enjoyed drawing and painting," he reflects. In the mid-2000s, his father had a Nikon D2X. "It was just sitting in the corner and collecting dust, so I thought I would give it a try."
A self-described "visual person," Wang fell in love with the camera's ability to go "beyond what the eye can see."
"I realized how much it can expand my canvas," he says.
Starting as a landscape and wildlife photographer, Wang transitioned into shooting weddings and families.
"People are the most interesting subjects," he says. "They all have a different story."
Since then, Wang has become one of Victoria's most in-demand photographers. We caught up with Wang—a longtime Focal user—to hear more of his story.
